History of Goa

Though the smallest state of India the History of Goa is very rich and dates back to the days of Mahabharata. In ancient times Goa was a Hindu city. But only a little of the reamins of the hisdu city can be seen in recent times. One can find the reference of Goa in the old Sanskrit inscriptions like the Puranas as Gove, Govapuri and Gormant. To the Arabian Geographers the place was known as Sinbabur or Sandabur. It was the Europeans who gave Goa its present name.

According to the ancient History of Goa when parashurama shot his arrow along the coast cauding the reduction of water founded the Konkan land. The Mahabharata describes the southern parts of Konkan was called Govarashtra of Gopakapattana or the nation of the cowherds. This area is presently known as the old Goa. From this account we can make out that Goa was a prosperous state as in India cattles are treated as wealths.

The better known History of Goa began from the 3rd Century BCE. During this time Goa became a part of the Mauryan empire. After this Goa from time to time came under several empires and rules. The state was rules by the Satavahanas of kolhapur, Chalukyans of Badami from the year 580 to 750. after that the area was ruled by Silharas, the Kadambas and the Chalukyans of Kalyani.

In the year 1312 the History of Goa took a new turn. At that time Goa became a part of the Muslim Sultanate of Delhi. But later in the year 1370 the Mughal empire surrendered Goa to the Vijayanagara empire. Goa was under the Vijayanagara rule for over 100 years. After that Goa was conquered by the Bahmani sultans of Gulbabrga. When the Bahmani empire turned down Goa was passed to Adil Shahis of Bijapur who made Old Goa or Velha Goa his second capital.

Another chapter of the History of Goa began when it came under the European rule. Vasco da Gama was the first European to come to the Velha Goa which was the most important trading center of Konkan coast. Seeing the prosperity of the trading center the Potuguese thought of acquiring the are. In the year 1510 Portuguese admiral Afonso de Albuquerque defeated the Muslim king of Bijapur and got the control over Goa. Later when the other European Countries started setting up colonies in India the Portuguese colonies slowly became surrounded by the English and Dutch colonies. O Goa became the most important colony for the Portuguese. The Portuguese men married the local women and many of the local people also took up Christianity. This gave a strong Portuguese influence in the culture of Goa.

After the independence of India from the British rule the Prime Minister of India requested Portugal to return Goa to India. But Portugal refused to do so. Later in the year 1961 the Indian Army executed the Operation Vijay and Goa became a union Territory of India. This marks a new chapter to the History of Goa. Later in the year 1987 Goa attained the statehood. Goa at present is the 25th State of Indian Republic.
